What is a Postback?
A Postback URL in Attribution Analytics is a URL request to a third-party system that notifies you of a conversion (typically a Sale). Technically, Postback is sending a GET request (a request method used to retrieve data from a server) to the targeted endpoint (also known as URL).
How does a Postback get triggered?
When a conversion is created or updated, our system will send a Postback request to Partner's/Publisher's for that conversion, as per setup.
Find out more on how to setup a Postback.
How does Postback get disabled?
Postback will get disabled by our system when the targeted URL returns a server or validation error in a pattern as follows:
- Traditional Postback with auto-disable: after returning an error response on the same Postback URL, 9 times continuously.
- Improved Postback with graceful retry mechanism: after returning an error response on the same Postback URL, throughout the grace period and all retries (more information below).
What is the Graceful Retry Mechanism?
Graceful Retry Mechanism enhances the postback experience for Partners/Publishers by:
- increasing the chances of their Postbacks to stay enabled.
- minimizing the amount of "lost" conversion postback traffic.
- auto retrying any failed postbacks according to Postback Retry Policy (4-hour retry interval with a maximum of 6 attempts).
How Graceful Retry Mechanism Works?
Whenever a postback returns a negative response (eg. server down, server not found), our retry mechanism will perform the next step based on the retry policy:
a. If the policy allows, the failed postback will be queued for a retry.
b. If the policy is disallowed or is violated, the failed postback will be disqualified and Postback URL will be disabled.
What are common issues with postback URLs?
- Incorrect URL formatting or parameters.
- Network/Server issues preventing the request from reaching your server.
- Incorrect data mapping on your side.
